The Hairdresser Isn’t So Scary... – How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Visit to the Salon

The first visit to the hairdresser is a big event, not only for the child but also for the parent, who often doesn’t know how to prepare. A new place, many stimuli, and strange people – it can be a stressful experience for a child, especially if they are a little shy. Here are some tips to turn a potentially scary encounter into a fun adventure:

Hairdresser Role Play

What child doesn’t love playing make-believe and pretending to be a princess trapped in a tower or a knight on a white horse? This time, you can choose a more realistic role – the hairdresser. Gather the necessary accessories: brushes, combs, hair ties, clips, and a mirror. Then, set up your own hair salon at home. Invite dolls or stuffed animals as customers, cut their hair, and create fun hairstyles. This kind of play helps your child get familiar with the new situation and understand what will happen during the visit.

Step by Step

The scariest part of going to the hairdresser is that it’s a new, unfamiliar experience. Explain to your child step by step what will happen. You can show them a hairdryer or scissors and let them play with the brush. Tell them why you’re going to the hairdresser and explain what this profession involves.

Lead by Example

There’s no better way to convince a child than by showing them yourself. Schedule an appointment together and show that going to the hairdresser is fun! You can bring someone along to look after your little one while you’re in the chair. If your child sees you laughing and enjoying yourself while the person with the scissors doesn’t hurt you, they’ll be less hesitant to sit in the hairdresser’s chair themselves.

Video Preparation

We live in an age where almost everything can be found online, and that includes educational videos for little ones explaining unusual situations they will face sooner or later. One of those experiences is a visit to the hairdresser. On YouTube, there are many cartoons and videos that show a step-by-step visit to the salon. You can easily find a video that appeals to your child and helps them get comfortable with the idea.

Choose the Right Salon

Another important tip is to choose a salon that specializes in cutting children’s hair. These places often have special chairs, like ones shaped like airplanes or ponies, and the staff is specially trained to meet the needs of even the most stubborn little clients.

Remember that good preparation is half the battle. Even if your child isn’t persuaded at first, don’t give up and try again later. Children change their minds more than anyone, so “the scary hairdresser” might soon become the best experience ever.
