What Does Your Hair Reveal? Nutrition, Diseases, and Lifestyle Reflected in Your Hair. Part I

Hair is a reflection of both your physical and mental health, as well as your diet. Experienced hairdressers can gather a lot of information from the condition of their clients' hair. Let’s take a closer look at the stories your hair may be telling.

What does oily hair reveal?

Oily hair doesn’t necessarily indicate a skin condition; it can also point to an unhealthy diet. If your diet consists mainly of sweets, sodas, fried foods, and heavily processed products, it’s no surprise that this affects your physical (and mental) condition.

When a client complains about oily hair, suggest enriching their diet with foods rich in vitamins A, E, C, B2, B3, and B6, which help regulate sebum production and alleviate the issue of greasy hair. However, without a dietary adjustment, little will change.

What does brittle hair reveal?

Brittle hair might indicate that the person is not consuming enough protein. Keratin, the primary building block of hair, requires adequate protein to be produced. Deficiencies in vitamins such as B5, C, and E can also contribute to hair fragility.

Protein-rich foods include meat, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and grains. Including these in the diet can help improve the strength and resilience of hair.

What does dry hair reveal?

There can be several reasons! It may be due to daily styling with curling irons, straighteners, or blow dryers, or regular hair coloring and bleaching, or insufficient water intake.

How much water should a person drink? It’s generally recommended that an adult drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of water per day, though this can vary depending on gender, climate, and physical activity. A general rule of thumb is to drink about 0.02 liters of water per kilogram of body weight.

Advice for clients with hair problems

If you notice hair issues with a client, inform them about potential causes. Encourage them to improve their diet and stay hydrated. You can also advise them to consult a specialist for further guidance.
